Shawn Nakagawa was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii.  At a young age, his father, previously a Chef,  taught him the importance of food sourcing from fishing and diving, then preparing and cooking a meal for their family.  His interest in culinary started when he was a senior at Kaimuki High School where he joined a culinary apprenticeship program with Sous Chef Maelani Iokepa, his teacher and mentor.  He later worked at Duke’s Waikiki and Kona Grill as a Line Cook before joining the Basalt team.  As Jr Sous Chef, Shawn wants to showcase his talents in Hawaii’s diverse food culture with a focus on Japanese and Chinese cuisine.  He simply just loves cooking for those who love to eat!  What’s his favorite food?  Ramen.
