Executive Chef

EXECUTIVE CHEF
KEITH STEEL KONG

Keith Steel Kong is the force behind the food vision and menu at BASALT. Born and raised on Oahu, Chef Keith was first introduced to the culinary world by his parents who were avid travelers and taught him that there was a world of food to explore.
After graduating from Punahou School in Honolulu, he began his culinary exploration at Colorado State University, where he worked his way up from dishwasher to cook at a restaurant owned by a Hawaii couple. This was the beginning of his culinary training that led him to study in San Francisco at the California Culinary Academy, graduating with honors in 1987, and at the Culinary Institute of America.

Several vegetarian options. Quality of food was remarkable. The toasted quinoa shrimp appetizer is highly recommended. Great wine selection and the wait staff was outstanding.

Overall my best meal in Honolulu. Had the macadamia nut crusted mahi with asparagus on garlic mashed potatoes. It was so good I could have licked the plate clean (don’t judge). Service was super friendly too. Will absolutely be back.

We had breakfast at Basalt, and the food and coffee were fantastic! The macadamia nut crusted waffles were the best I've had on island, and the French press was great as well. The prices were far better than the other restaurants that are on the beach. This was the best place I've experienced for breakfast so far in Waikiki.
